Fortaleza da Barra / Pousada de São Tiago
Macao Hotels
The Fortaleza da Barra was built in 1629 and enlarged in 1740. It was originally commanded by an officer directly responsible to the Portuguese king. There now remain only the outer walls, within which is the Pousada de São Tiago, a small luxury hotel opened in 1982. The fort's chapel contains a statue of the Madonna and one of São Tiago (St James), patron saint of the Portuguese army.
