The town of Dudelange (pop. 14,000), also known as "Forge du Sud", lies at the foot of Mount St Jean. The old steelworks in the town have been replaced by a modern cold rolling-mill. The town, with its town hall, is an attractive commercial center. Dudelange also has a local museum with exhibits on archeology, paleontology, history, steelwork
and a photo gallery). The town has many flowered squares and is dominated by the area's characteristic red rocks. The neo-Gothic parish church has been renovated and features the famous "Way of the Cross", created by one of the country's greatest painters: Dom. Lang. The RTL TV transmitter is located on the top of the "Ginzebierg" hill and provides excellent panoramic views. There is also a tourist lookout tower in Duelange with the restored ruins of an ancient castle (open year round; free admission, guide at Taverne Mont St-Jean). At the R. Hartmann sports center can be found an indoor swimming pool and an omnisports hall. Other attractions in Dudelange include: an open-air swimming pool with terrace and restaurant, a municipal park called "Léi", and the natural park "Haardt" with a 240 hectares surface.
