Lüneburg - Heath Nature Reserve

The finest Lüneburg heath scenery is to be found in the central part of the Heath. Here, in 1921, an area of some 20,000 hectares/50,000 acres around the village of Wilsede was designated as the first German nature reserve.

Wilseder Berg
In the center of the Lüneburg Heath nature reserve rises the Wilseder Berg (169 m/554ft), the highest point in the North German lowlands, from which there are extensive views of the heath. Southeast of the hill is the Totengrund ("Dead Men's Ground"), a low-lying area covered with heather and juniper through which the dead were borne from Wilsede to Bispingen for burial.
Heath Game Park
On the northeastern border of the Lüneburg Heath nature reserve, near Hanstedt-Nindorf, lies the Lüneburg Heath Game Park, with over 1,000 animals, including bear, elk and many birds.
