Vienna Woods Wienerwald

The Wienerwald (Vienna Woods), which forms a wide arc around the northwestern and southwestern sides of Vienna, lies at the northeast outer rim of the Alps, composed of limestone and sandstone. The Kahlenberg and Leopoldsberg in particular are popular resorts with the people of Vienna and visitors to the city.
Past Tulln on the Danube, the Wienerwald comes steadily closer to the southern bank. Muckendorf and Zeiselmauer can be seen Greifenstein (right bank), with its castle high above the river (173m/568ft); on the left Burg Kreuzenstein (184m/604ft) comes into view some distance away. At Höflein the Danube flows past the last foothills of the Wienerwald and turns southeastward.
