St Francisville (pop. 1,700) was established near the site of a monastery in 1785. The monastery was destroyed by fire but the name was retained. Residents of St Francisville waited seven years to find out if they were part of the Louisiana Purchase.
The Afton Villa Gardens in St Francisville is a 20-acre park and gardens located next to the ruins of a villa that was built in the 1850s and destroyed by fire in 1963. Dogwood, azaleas, daffodils, and other blooms are part of the formal boxwood garden.

The Audubon State Historic Site is a 100-acre woodland site that includes the 1806 Oakley Plantation House. John James Audubon, naturalist, lived in the home for 4 months while working on "Birds of America." A collection of first editions of his print is displayed. Formal and kitchen gardens, two slave cabins, and nature trails are on the grounds.

Butler Greenwood was built in St Francisville in 1796 and is still run by descendants of the original owners. The English-style plantation house has a formal Victorian parlor furnished with French pier mirrors and Louis XV rosewood pieces. The formal gardens date from the 1840s.

The Greenwood Plantation near St Francisville is an 1830 Greek Revival mansion that burned down in 1960 and was restored in the 1980s. The decor included ladies' parlor furniture, portraits, silver doorknobs and hinges.

Rosedown Gardens was created by Daniel and Martha Turnbull in 1835. The Rosedown Plantation is a State Historic Site that is flanked by camellias, azaleas, rare shrubs and trees. The Turnbull family has occupied the mansion for more than 120 years.
