Shreveport (pop. 375,000) is the third largest city in Louisiana. It was founded in 1836 and incorporated in 1839 and named for Capt Henry Miller Shreve who cleared the log jam that had choked the Red River. This benefited Shreveport, Cane's Bluff and Bennett. The town was a hub for cotton and in 1906, when oil was discovered, it became a major oil producer.
