Shreveport Tourist Attractions

Shreveport (pop. 375,000) is the third largest city in Louisiana. It was founded in 1836 and incorporated in 1839 and named for Capt Henry Miller Shreve who cleared the log jam that had choked the Red River. This benefited Shreveport, Cane's Bluff and Bennett. The town was a hub for cotton and in 1906, when oil was discovered, it became a major oil producer.

Ark-La-Tex Antique & Classic Vehicle Museum

The location of Ark-La-Tex in Shreveport was originally an early 1920's Dodge Car and Graham Truck Dealership. Exhibits include both antique and classic vehicles including motorcycles and antique fire trucks from automotive history. Vintage costumes are on display, of which the most popular is an original "Mae West" dress in the back display. The dress is brown taffeta with daring black lace.

Meadows Museum of Art

The Meadows Museum of Art is located on the campus of Centenary College in Shreveport. The museum was established in 1976 for the purpose of housing the Jean Despujols Collection of French Academic paintings and drawings of the peoples and lands of pre-Vietnam Indo-china.

RW Norton Art Gallery

The RW Norton Art Gallery in Shreveport features collections of American and European paintings, sculptures and decorative arts spanning more than four centuries. Rare books, antique dolls, Wedgewood pottery and silver pieces by Paul Revere are on display. The grounds feature a garden with more than 10,000 azaleas.

Barnwell Memorial Garden and Art Center

The Barnwell Memorial Garden and Art Center is a dome-shaped conservatory housing the Shreveport Botanical Gardens, and art and flower displays. The gallery across the rear of the facility offers a panoramic view of the Red River

Louisiana State Exhibit Museum

Built in 1937, the Shreveport Exhibit Museum is an Art Deco structure designed by Shreveport architect Edward Neild. Frescoes, dioramas, murals and exhibits present Louisiana history, agriculture, industry and technology.

Sci-Port Discovery Center

Sci-Port Discovery Center is a science and entertainment center featuring science, math and space exhibits, an IMAX Dome Theatre, and the laser SPACE DOME Planetarium.

The Gardens of the American Rose Center

The American Rose Center near Shreveport is the research facility of the American Rose Society. Visitors can walk through the gardens where roses bloom from April through October.

WaterTown USA

WaterTown USA in Shreveport is a water park with pools, waterslides, a playground and a section for small children.
