In New Iberia you can visit the magnificent pre-war villa "Shadows on the Teche", and then continue to Avery Island, where the famous Tabasco sauce is mixed (guided tours) and the Rip van Winkle Gardens with their superabundance of tropical plants.
New Iberia (pop. 32,000) was settled by French Acadians who fled Nova Scotia, Spaniards joined them in 1779 and called the settlement Nueva Iberia.
The Rip Van Winkle Gardens near New Iberia features 25 acres of landscaped scenic gardens, with sculptures surrounding the Joseph Jefferson home. The 1870 home is detailed in Steamboat Gothic and Moorish architectural styles.

Shadows-on-the-Teche in New Iberia is an historic house that tells the story of a 19th century Louisiana plantation. The story is best told through a collection of original family photos, letters and documents. The gardens are filled with azaleas, camellias and live oaks.
