Pasadena - Norton Simon Museum of Art
The Norton Simon Museum of Art was founded in 1924 as the Pasadena Museum of Modern Art, and erected on its present site (corner of Orange Grove Boulevard) in 1969. In 1974 it was reorganized under the supervision of the industrialist Norton Simon, rebuilt and re-opened a year later as somewhere to display his own impressive collection. Larger works of contemporary art for which there is no room in Pasadena are on permanent loan to Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Things to See
Dutch and Flemish Art
From the Dutch and Flemish masters at the Norton Simon Museum of Art you will find Rembrandt (a "Titus" painting, a self-portrait and the "Bearded Man with the Broad-brimmed Hat"), as well as numerous etchings; there is also a Rubens, a particularly beautiful Mernling ("Jesus Blessing") and a portrait by Franz Hals.
French Art
The widest display at the Norton Simon Museum of Art in Pasadena is devoted to the various periods of French art; ranging from Rigaud, Poussin, Chardin and Watteau (17th and 18th centuries) to Degas, Monet, Manet, Rousseau, Seurat, Cézanne, Renoir, Gauguin and Matisse (19th and 20th centuries). The collection could be described as an almost panoramic vista of French art. The "Portrait of a Farmer" by van Gogh hangs in this department. In a special gallery in the basement you will find 88 examples of the work of this Impressionist, including countless models for his little bronze figures. Cubist works by Picasso, Braque and Juan Gris lead on to painters who worked in Germany, including the American Lyonel Feiniger, the Russians Jawlensky and Kandinsky and the Swiss Paul Klee.
Italian Art
The Italian masters represented at the Norton Simon Museum of Art include Filippino Lippi, Raphael ("Madonna and Child with Book") and Tiepolo ("Victory of Virtue and Steadfastness"), to name only some of the more important.
Sculptures
Nineteenth and 20th century sculptures can be seen both inside the Norton Simon Museum of Art in Pasadena as well as outside in the gardens; these include Rodin's "Burghers of Calais", a Henry Moore, a Henri Laurens and an interesting artistic presentation by the contemporary American John Mason of an oven for baking bricks. Particularly worthy of note, however, are bronzes of the Indian Chola period (10th century) as well as stone-sculptures from India, Tibet and Nepal.
Spanish Art
The Spaniards are represented at the Norton Simon Museum of Art by the painters Murillo, Zurbaran and Goya; you will also find a number of graphic works by Goya.
