London - St James's District
St James's is a very elegant quarter west of Trafalgar Square. The leading London clubs such as the Athenaeum Club are found along the Pall Mall - which was the original playing field for the game of paillemaille, a game similar to cricket and popular with the aristocracy in the 17th century - and around Waterloo Palace and St James's Square. The 131ft/40m-high monument to the Duke of York towers over Waterloo Place

Marlborough House
Marlborough House, now a Commonwealth conference and research center, was built by Wren (1709-11) for Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, and subsequently much altered and enlarged. It was occupied in the 19th century by Prince Leopold, later Leopold I of the Belgians (1831), and in 1850 became the official residence of the Prince of Wales, occupied successively by the future Edward VII and George V. Queen Mary lived here from 1936 until her death in 1953.
The house contains magnificent murals by the French painter Louis Laguerre, depicting the Duke of Marlborough's victories at Blenheim, Ramillies and Malplaquet.
