Liverpool - Cathedrals & University
Liverpool's possession of two cathedrals, a Roman Catholic as well as an Anglican reflects the high proportion of Roman Catholics of Irish origin in its population compared with other English towns. During the great emigrations in the periods of poverty and famine in Ireland in the 19th and 20th centuries, Liverpool was the principal port of embarkation for the United States, and many of the emigrants also settled in the city.
