Lisbon - Benfica
The suburb of Benfica lies on the northwest edge of Lisbon. In the past Benfica was known for its villas and the spacious quintas (country houses) belonging to rich citizens of Lisbon who spent their weekends here. Since then tower block complexes, shopping centers and light industry have come to dominate this part of the city. The rapid development of the area has been accelerated through the extension of the metro to the northwest.

Zoological Garden
Lisbon Zoo was first founded in 1884 but had to change its location twice before it opened its gates here in 1905. The site has some very fine old animal houses, cages and aviaries; animals from all over the world are kept and cared for here. A dogs' cemetery at the north end of the zoo is a very strange feature.
By following a trail of brown arrows through the zoo grounds the most important animal enclosures and further attractions are reached. The zoo can also be toured in a small train.
