Linkoping Cathedral Description
Northwest of Stora Torget is Linköping's Cathedral, begun about 1150 in Romanesque style (north doorway) and later altered and enlarged in Gothic style. The south doorway has rich figural decoration. The 105m/345ft high tower dates only from 1886. The Late Gothic choir was the work of Master Gerlach of Cologne. To the right of the altar is the marble sarcophagus of the Lutheran bishop Terserus (d. 1679). In the south transept is a winged altar with paintings by the Dutch master Marten van Heemskerk (1543), which was presented to the Cathedral by King John III. To the north of the Cathedral are the Bishop's Palace (1773) and the Diocesan Library, which possesses numerous old manuscripts and rare printed books.
