Lier - Begijnhof

From the Grote Markt Eikelstraat leads south through Gevangenpoort (1375) by the wall promenade (former moat) to the adjoining begijnhof (béguinage), one of the most picturesque in Belgium. With its low cottages, narrow alleys and crossroads it resembles a small town within a town. The béguinage was founded in the 13th C. and, together with most of the others, destroyed in the 16th C. The church dedicated to St Margaret is 17th C. and has a pulpit by Schneemaeckers.
