Lienz - Lavanter Kirchbichl

Near Lavant, about 6km/4mi southeast of Lienz, on the site of an early mountain settlement, lies the "Lavanter Kirchbichl", mainly carved stone remains from the period of the Roman Empire. Particularly worth noting are the remnants of an Early Christian church, unearthed during excavations carried out since 1948, covering several building phases. After the original church had been destroyed in the sixth C. the medieval church of St Ulrich with a Gothic spire was later erected here. On the top of the hill stands the church of St Peter and Paul, erected on the site of an Early Christian place of worship; note the Roman remains on the high altar, with figures and inscriptions.
