Liège - Cathédrale Saint-Paul
|
|
The Vinâve d'Ile opens out onto the Place de la Cathédrale. Here stands the former Convent Church of Saint-Paul, founded by Bishop Heraclius in 971; since 1801 it has been the successor to the Cathedral of Saint-Lambert in the diocese. The 90m/295ft-high tower has a carillon from the old cathedral which plays the Walloon hymn "Ii Chant dès Wallons". The original Romanesque church was destroyed at the beginning of the 13th C. and replaced by the early Gothic church of 1232-1289, which later underwent further expansion.
