Vaduz (460 m/1,509ft; pop. 500), capital of the Principality of Liechtenstein, seat of its government and parliament and its main tourist attraction, lies near the right bank of the Rhine under the towering summit of Rätikon.
Liechtenstein's State Art Gallery is housed in the "Englishmen's Building". The first floor is devoted to temporary exhibitions; on the second floor can be seen the notable permanent collection in the Prince's Gallery "From Breugel to Rubens" (masterpieces of Flemish landscape painting from the collections of the Prince of Liechtenstein).

To the east of Vaduz, above the town, rises Schloss Vaduz (no admittance), which dates back to the 12th C. The cemetery and buildings on the east side form the oldest part; the chapel is probably High Middle Ages. The round bastions to the northeast and southwest were built in the 16th C. after it was burned down in 1499 by the Confederates. The west side was rebuilt in the 17th C. and between 1901 and 1910 the castle was rebuilt in 16th C. style.
The Liechtenstein Landesmuseum contains a relief model of the Principality on a scale of 1:10,000; prehistory and the early historical period; weapons; religious art.

On the east side of the Städtle, the so-called "Englishmen's Building" houses the Vaduz Post Museum. On the opposite side of the street is the Post Office.

In the middle of Vaduz is the Rathausplatz, with the Rathaus (Town Hall). From here the town's main street, Städtle (one-way traffic in the opposite direction), runs south for some 500 m/1,641ft to the Neo-Gothic parish church (Pfarrkirche, 1869-73).
4km/2mi south of Vaduz is Triesen (463 m/1,519ft; pop. 3,000), with old houses in the upper part of the village and chapels dedicated to St Mamertus and the Virgin. Walks and climbs on the Lavena, Rappenstein and Falknis hills. From here it is 5km/ 3mi to Balzers.
