Lentini - Archeological Zone
The ancient town of Leontinoi lay 3km/2mi to the south of the present town in the Valley of San Mauro and on the hills of Metapiccola and Colle San Mauro. The Archeological Zone is reached by taking the road to Carlentini (signed). The following can be seen: the remains of the town walls with their many towers, dating from the seventh-fifth centuries B.C., the strong Syracuse gate in the south, the agora and a Greek temple, as well as a necropolis dating from the fourth/third centuries B.C.
Evidence has been established of Sikel dwelling-places, which show that the town was populated by Sikels before the arrival of the Greeks.
