Description
The famous pilgrimage church and Cathedral of Notre-Dame du Puy stands at the foot of the Rocher Corneille, above the old town. Built towards the end of the 12th century, it shows a mingling of Auvergnat Romanesque and the style of southwestern France, with clear Byzantine influence. A broad flight of steps (19th century) leads up to the Cathedral facade, in multi-colored volcanic stone, and into the three-arched porch, which has 13th century paintings showing Byzantine influence on the vaulting. The steps end at the former main entrance to the Cathedral, which was walled up in 1780.
