The ships of the Hurtigrute provide passengers with cabins, traditional Norwegian food, entertainment and talks on the history of Norway and of the mailships. The voyage can be interrupted by shore excursions or overnight stops at intermediate ports. For tourists the journey is a memorable one, with the experience of crossing the Arctic Circle, the scenery of some of the most impressive fjords in western and northern Norway, the midnight sun between May and August and, on clear autumn and winter nights, the aurora borealis or "northern lights". In addition they see something of the way of life, the fisheries, architecture and traditions of the coastal settlements. Over the 11 days that the trip takes, however, no guarantees can be given about the weather.
