The Hurtigrute ("Coastal Express") is an essential element in the life of Norway's western coastal regions. Every day at 10 p.m. one of the 11 black steamers of the Hurtigrute service sails from Bergen for Kirkenes, on the Russian frontier, calling at 44 intermediate ports. Formerly a vital transport link for places otherwise difficult of access on the west coast, it has within the last 30 years developed into a major tourist attraction. The Hurtigrute operates 365 days a year and, although the violent winter storms may sometimes lead to delays, the small but very seaworthy vessels have always gotten through.
