Burg Trausnitz

 
On a steep hill above Landshut (464 m/1,522ft; by road 2km/1.25mi, on foot from Dreifaltigkeitsplatz 15 minutes) is Burg Trausnitz, founded by Duke Ludwig I in 1204, at the same time as the town, and until 1503 the seat of the Wittelsbach Dukes of Lower Bavaria. Between 1568 and 1578 it was rebuilt by Prince William as an imposing palace in the Italian style (Fürstenbau, with state apartments and the Narrentreppe or Fools' Staircase, decorated with wall paintings; Late Romanesque chapel).
