Lamego - Santuário Nossa Senhora dos Remédios

The main sight of Lamego is undoubtedly the pilgrimage church of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. From the town a magnificent Baroque staircase with 14 Stations of the Cross leads up to the sumptuous 18th century twin-towered church on the Monte de Santo Estêvao. (It is also accessible by car, forking right at the entrance to Lamego coming from Viseu.) Thousands of pilgrims gather here at the beginning of September every year to seek healing and consolation. The terrace below the church holds statues of kings and biblical figures, with an obelisk in the center, and affords an impressive view over Lamego and the surrounding fertile countryside.
