Croajingolong National Park
86,000ha.
The recently established Croajingolong National Park takes in the previously existing Captain Cook, Wingan Inlet and Mallacoota Inlet reserves together with the Nadgee nature reserve in New South Wales. A series of lonely, wild beaches and rocky promontories extend for 100km from the New South Wales border along the East Gippsland coast to Sydenham Inlet (Bemm River).
Also within the park is Point Hicks (lighthouse), which Cook sailed past in 1770. It is named after the officer of the watch who was the first to sight the Australian mainland. The park preserves the original vegetation of the rain forest, woodland and heath. In spring there is a profusion of wild flowers, and throughout the year rare animals may be observed.
