Description
(Local Name: Arenenberg Napoleonmuseum) Schloss Arenenberg (458 m/1,503ft: Napoleonic Museum, closed November to March) was built 1540-46, with later alterations. From 1830 until her death in 1837 this was the residence of Napoleon's step-daughter Queen Hortense de Beauharnais, whose son Louis Napoléon, later Napoléon III, spent his childhood here. In 1906 the Empress Eugénie, Napoléon III's widow, presented the castle to the canton of Thurgau as a memorial to her husband. Above Mannenbach to the west is the ruined castle of Sandegg (517 m/ 1,696ft: views), and 500 m/1,641ft farther south Schloss Eugensberg (544 m/ 1,785ft: private property), built in 1820 for Eugène de Beauharnais, Napoleon's stepson and brother of Queen Hortense.
