Description
3.5km/2mi southeast of Rheineck is St Margrethen (402 m/1,319ft: pop. 5,000), a rail and road junction on the Swiss-Austrian frontier (customs) situated on the Old Rhine in a fertile fruit-growing region. It is also a spa (Kneipp treatment). St Margaret's chapel, a cemetery church dating from 1090, has frescoes and Late Baroque altars. Directly next to the highway is the large "Rheinpark" shopping center. To the southwest is Schloss Bergsteig, to the west Schloss Vorburg (open to visitors).

Pleasant walks to the hill villages (good views) in the St Gallen and Appenzell areas.
