Description
North of Tägerwilen, on the Rhine, in the picturesque Gottlieben district of Tägerwilen (alt. 398 m/1,306ft), stands a palace built in 1251 as a subsidiary residence of the bishops of Constance (enlarged 1480, rebuilt in Neo-Gothic style 1837-38), in which Jan Hus, his fellow Hussite Jerome of Prague and Anti-Pope John XXIII were imprisoned in 1415; the palace now belongs to the singer Lisa della Casa. There are a number of handsome half-timbered houses, including the Drachenburg and the Waaghaus or Weigh-House (both 17th C.), as well as the so-called Burg (Castle) and Haus Rheineck. A local specialty is the pastry called "Gottlieber Hüppen".
