White Mountain National Forest

Nature lovers, hikers and winter sports enthusiasts will all find what they are looking for in this mountain region. The l 93, the U.S. 302 and the NH 16 run through or past the most important places and natural features in the western part of the National Forest.

Franconia Notch State Park

One of the most visited holiday areas in the White Mountains is the Franconia Notch (Gorge) State Park.
The park features pleasant walking trails. A prime feature of the park was the "Old Man of the Mountains", a face in profile, but this rocky crag collapsed in May of 2003.

Flume Gorge

The Flume Gorge in Franconia Notch State Park is a natural chasm. The granite walls rise to a height of 90ft/27m and are up to 20ft/6m apart. It has a walking trail and covered bridges over waterfalls. There is also a visitor's center with information on the area.

Franconia Notch - Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway

The Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway is one of New Hampshire's most spectacular rides. The tramway brings visitors to top of Cannon Mountain. There are walking paths, an observation deck and food service at the top.

Franconia Notch - Basin

The basin is a 30ft/9m wide and 15ft/5m deep glacial-formed pothole at the base of a waterfall. The area can be reached by a trail off U.S. 3.

Crawford Notch State Park

Crawford Notch State Park lies just north of Bartlett, New Hampshire. U.S. 302 cuts through the area offering scenic views of the surroundings. An 1826 landslide on Willey Mountain killed the Willey family as they were fleeing but left their house intact. Near the House is the visitors center for Crawford Notch State Park.
Hiking trails and nature walks run through the park. Camping picnicking and fishing are also popular activities in this area.

Arethusa Falls

There is steep trail through Crawford Notch State Park which leads to the 200ft/60m Arethusa Falls. The falls are best viewed from below.

North Conway, New Hampshire

North Conway basically consists of one single street, but one lined with massive factory outlets selling well-known brands of textiles (fabric sales), and outdoor and winter-sports equipment shops with incredible bargains - New Hampshire has no sales tax.
The town is a resort for all seasons. The Conway Scenic Railway runs several excursions from the Conway rail station with a collection of antique locomotives.

The Conway Scenic Railway in North Conway offers trips through the Mount Washington Valley in restored passenger cars.

Glen, New Hampshire

Glen is a good base from which to explore nearby recreational areas, including the Mount Washington Valley. The area offers cross-country skiing.

Story Land in Glen is a fairy tale theme park, that opened in 1954, with rides and other experiences for children and families.

Berlin, New Hampshire

The city of Berlin (pop. 10,000) has a long history although it was one of the last areas to be settled in New Hampshire. The town is known for it's logging and paper making industries and is one of oldest sites of continuous paper making. The city has several historical landmarks and buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Northern Forest Heritage Park

The Northern Forest Heritage Park in Berlin includes the Old Brown Company House Museum and ten acres of land. The park also has an amphitheater and Blacksmith Shop. There are plans for further development, including a recreated turn of the century logging camp.
The goal is to illustrate the history and heritage of the Northern Forest of New England and Quebec as a working forest.

Jefferson - Six Gun City

Six Gun City in Jefferson is a western-style theme park with rides and shows in a recreated old west town.

Santa's Village

Santa's Village in Jefferson is a Christmas theme park, with rides, entertainment, a water park called Ho Ho H2O, and Christmas related activities.

Littleton Museum, Littleton, New Hampshire

The Littleton Museum portrays life in the late 1800's in Littleton on it's living history farms. Interpreters dressed in period costume perform daily tasks, similar to the early settlers to this area.
The museum building contains a large collection of historical artifacts. There is also a library with books, manuscripts, and a large photo collection.

Littleton Grist Mill

The restored 1798 Littleton Grist Mill produces stone ground flours, the same as it did in the late 1700's.

Rumney, New Hampshire

Rumney is a small town located at the southern edge of the White Mountain National Forest. Rumney was originally granted to a group of settlers from Connecticut in 1761 but some failed to comply with the charter so the town was regranted to another group of settlers in 1767.

D Acres of New Hampshire

D Acres is an organic farm and educational center that offers workshops and other farm-based educational opportunties. New Hampshire made products such as woodcrafts, baked goods and farm products are also produced.
Visitors to D Acres can tour the organic gardens, hike the forest trails, visit with the farm animals and learn about alternative energy systems.

Center Sandwich, New Hampshire

The small town of Center Sandwich lies just northeast of Squam Lake. It is the main town in the Sandwich region. The town is primarily a summer resort and craft center.

Center Sandwich Historical Society Museums

The Sandwich Historical Society is housed in the Elisha Marston House, circa 1850, which displays antique furnishings, archives and a library. The Quimby Barn Museum features transportation and farm equipment. The barn served as the local high school from 1921 to 1963. The historical society also owns the Grange Hall, a Quaker Meetinghouse, and the Lower Corner School, created in 1825.

Dixville Notch State Park

One of the most impressive of the White Mountain notches is Dixville Notch at the 127 acre Dixville Notch State Park. The park features a scenic gorge, waterfalls, and streams. Hiking trails take visitors to Table Rock and other nearby mountains.

Lincoln, New Hampshire

Lincoln (pop. 1,300) is located at the west end of the scenic Kancamagus Highway in White Mountains National Forest. The town is a good base from which to explore the surrounding area.

Clark's Trading Post

Clark's Trading Post features a variety of entertainment and historical displays. Visitors can see black bear performances, take a ride on the White Mountain Central Railroad, visit an 1884 fire station with antique equipment or the historical museum with a range of different artifacts. There are also rides and other amusements for children.

Loon Mountain Resort

A gondola takes visitors up 7,000ft/2,130m to the summit of Loon Mountain for panoramic views of White Mountain National Forest. In the winter the gondola services the ski hill. There is an observation tower as well as hiking trails at the top. The are also offers horseback riding, mountain biking, and a variety of shows, including a lumberjack demonstration and a mountaineer storyteller.

Hobo Railroad

The Hobo Railroad in Lincoln offers rides on restored coaches through the surrounding area.

Whale's Tale Water Park

The Whale's Tale Water Park features a wave pool, river, waterslides, and other water-related activities.

Lost River Gorge & Boulder Caves

Lost River Gorge & Boulder Caves features a self-guided tour that transports visitors back through millions of years of natural history. Some caves are difficult to enter. The Gorge has walkways and bridges so children can enjoy the hike.

Pinkham Notch Scenic Area

Located within the White Mountains National Forest at 2,030ft/620m, the Pinkham Notch Scenic Area offers scenic views of the mountains, rivers and gorges. There are good hiking trails in the area.

Polar Caves Park, Plymouth, New Hampshire

The Polar Caves Park's main attractions are the caves which can be explored by foot on a series of trails. The caves are a result of glacial action from over 20,000 years ago.

Mary Baker Eddy Historic House, Rumney, New Hampshire

Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science, lived in this house in Rumney between 1860 and 1862.

Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, Holderness, New Hampshire

The Squam Lakes Natural Science Center features natural history exhibits, live animals, as well as nature tours and a variety of annual events.

Hebron - Paradise Point Nature Center

The Paradise Point Nature Center is owned by the Audubon Society and features live animals, programs, and workshops on a 43 acre site.
