Kosi Bay Nature Reserve

From the village of Ndumu a track runs 70km/43mi south and then east to the Kosi Bay Nature Reserve (area 10,000 ha/25,000ac), on the coast of the Indian Ocean. Here mangrove swamps and swamp woodland surround a freshwater lake and several salt lakes. The fauna includes hippopotamuses, crocodiles and leatherback turtles (an endangered species), as well as 250 species of birds. The sandy and swampy terrain is negotiable only in a four-wheel-drive vehicle. There is simple accommodation for visitors, who can go on guided walks led by game wardens.
