The splendidly engineered Gerlos Road (toll; maximum gradient 9%, 1 in 11; several bridges) leads northwest from Krimml. From the Filzsteinalpe parking lot (1,628m/5,341ft) there is a road (1km/0.75mi) to the Filzstein (1,643m/5,391ft; inn) with a view into the valley of the Krimmler Ache. Some 11km/7mi from Krimml a road branches off to the Gerlosplatte, a high plateau (about 1,700m/5,600ft) noted for its excellent snow, with hotels and winter sports facilities. To the south rears the Plattenkogel (2,040m/6,693ft), an hour's climb (also chairlift). The old pass (1,504m/4,935ft) is a little off the road, which now enters the province of Tirol.
