Mainau

The "flower island" of Mainau (area 45 hectares/110 acres) lies 7km/4.5mi north of Konstanz off the southern shore of the Überlinger See. It attracts many visitors with its beautiful parks and gardens, luxuriant with semitropical and sometimes tropical vegetation. It is now owned by a foundation headed by the Swedish Count Lennart Bernadotte.

On the island is a Schloss (1739-46) built for the Grand Duke of Baden, with a large coat of arms of the Teutonic Order on the gable. A notable feature of the interior is the White Hall. To the west are an old defensive tower (one of the original sixteen) and the gatehouse.
