King's Lynn - Seven Churches of Marshland
Visitors interested in churches should see at least some of the "Seven Churches of Marshland". They are built on the fine sand and silt of the fenland, crossed by lakes and inlets, which was reclaimed from the sea. The churches lie between King's Lynn and Wisbech, 13mi/21km away, and are mostly built of silver-gray Ancaster stone, in Perpendicular style (Clenchwarton, Terrington St Clement, Walpole St Peter), Perpendicular and Early English (Emneth), Early English (West Walton) and Norman (Walsoken). Walpole St Peter is the "cathedral" of the marshland churches, with a separate tower and 81 very beautiful windows.
