Flagler Memorial Monument Description
Flagler Island is an artificial island that was built in 1920.

This site honors railroad baron and Standard Oil partner Henry Flagler, who, along with Julia Tuttle, is responsible for the development of Southern Florida. Flagler extended the railway to Miami, based on advice from Tuttle, which opened the region up to expansion and helped make it into the tourist mecca it is today.

The 110 foot high obelisk with sculptures that point in four directions include a man in a Roman toga representing Industry; a female holding books representing Education; a sailor shielding his eyes from the sun representing the Pioneers; and a female with a long gown and tiara representing prosperity.
