Nyeri Tourist Attractions
Nyeri is a town located at the eastern base of the Aberdares Mountain Range. Nyeri was a garrison during the early colonial days but soon became a trading centre for white farmers who produced cattle, wheat and coffee.Farming is the main industry with all types of vegetables cultivated in the lush surroundings. Sugar cane, citrus fruits, tea, coffee and bananas are also locally produced.Local scenery includes Mt Kenya, which is visible on a clear day. The Wajee Nature Park lies just south of Nyeri. It is the burial place of Lord Robert Baden-Powell, a hero in the Boer War and best known as the founder of the Scouting movement.
Outspan Hotel (Baden-Powell's Paxtu Cottage)
Lord Robert Baden-Powell's Paxtu cottage stands on the grounds of the Outspan Hotel. To 'outspan' means to unyoke one's weary oxen at the end of the journey. Lord Baden Powell, who was proclaimed Chief Scout of the world, recognised the peacefulnessand beauty of the Outspan. He and his wife stayed at the Outspan hotel for the last three years of his life. Lord Baden Powell and his wife are buried in the town cemetery. His grave faces towards the snowcaps of Mt Kenya and the walls of his cottage Paxtu are covered in memorabilia.The Outspan Hotel offers a daily display of traditional Kikuyu dancing, sixteen acres for nature walks along the Chania River, escorted bird walks, and excursions to nearby tea and coffee plantations.
Wajee Nature Park
Wajee Nature Park is located south of Nyeri. It is a nature sanctuary and campsite with 10 ha of forest. Wajee Nature Park is perfect for bird lovers as it is home to many rare forest birds. The rare Hinde's Babbler has been sighted in the park along with over 110 other recorded species of birds. Bird watching is enjoyed amongst flowering shrubbery.Nature trails and traditional Kikuyu entertainment are available. Guided nature and bird walks can be arranged. The campsite consists of a family home built in 1941, huts and a camping ground.
