Nanyuki Attractions
British settlers founded Nanyuki in 1907. There is a British army base here, and a Kenyan Air Force base. Air force jets can be seen flying to Nairobi from Nanyuki on public holidays
Nanyuki has become a popular base for several of the trekking routes so climbers and backpackers on their way to or from Mount Kenya frequent the town.
Just before Nanyuki, the road crosses the Equator and a large sign marks your arrival in the Northern Hemisphere.
Around Nanyuki are many outdoor opportunities including fishing and wildlife viewing. There are several private wildlife parks and ranches that have become sanctuaries for wildlife. Mount Kenya Safari Club is one of the best known, it began in the 1950s and the member list included Winston Churchill, William Holden, Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. The private wildlife sanctuary is home to a herd of rare bongo antelope.
