Makindu is a small village with a large Sikh temple or gurdwara, which is sometimes lit up with lights giving it a magical appearance. The Sikhs who were working on the railway line from the Coast to Uganda built the temple in 1926. The Gurdwara complex has accommodation for travelers. The Muslim faith is also competing for the attention of the locals with a large religious center.
The highlight of a visit to Makindu is the Makindu Handicrafts Co-operative, where you can watch and photograph carvers at work. This community project employs 120 Akamba people who produce woodcarvings from renewable wood.
