Kayseri - Bazaar Area Kapali Çarsi

Compared to the covered bazaar in Istanbul, the Kapali Çarsi at Kayseri certainly looks provincial and yet it is a typical example of traditional Turkish basalt structures. The absence of the typical "tourist shops" in the bazaar may well strike the visitor - Kayseri's bazaar is primarily a shopping center for the local people. The best way to view the bazaar is from the Istanbul Caddesi.

Must-see attractions nearby:
Opposite the Kursunlu Cami, an opening in the old city wall leads into the old town passing the daily yoghurt market which is certainly worth a visit. A few yards further on opposite the Pamuk Çesmesi stands an Ottoman caravanserai, which can be identified by the balls of sheep's wool hanging outside. Diagonally opposite next to a small mosque stands the main building of the traditional bazaar, which gives access to the domed square bedesten (late 18th century), the covered part of the bazaar.

A short distance to the south a narrow alley leads to the square in front of the Ulu Cami where to the southwest stand four historic buildings: Melik Gazi Medresesi, Hatuniye Medresesi, Kadi Hamami and Hoca Bey Camii (both Ottoman).

To the northeast on the left of the southern entrance to the covered bazaar and opposite the Ulu Cami stands the late 18th century Vezir Hani caravanserai, one of Kayseri's most interesting sights.
