Gepatschferner

To the south of the Gepatsch reservoir stretches the Gepatschferner, some 10.2km/6.25mi long and covering an area of 24.8 sq.km/9-1/2 sq. mi, the second largest glacier in the Eastern Alps after the Pasterze. The Fassenbach flows from this glacier.

The broad Gepatschferner, with its much fissured tongues of ice reaching far down the valley to the Gepatsch-Haus in the Kauner Tal (1,928m/6,326ft), is the second largest glacier in the Austrian Alps. On an island of rock amid the ice is the Brandenburger Haus (3,272m/10,735ft), which can be reached from Vent, in the Venter Tal, by way of the Vernagt-Hütte (Würzburger Haus, 2,766m/9,075ft) or by way of the Hochjoch-Hospiz (2,423m/7,950ft) on the long Hintereisferner.
