Nea Moni Church - Mosaics

Among the principal scenes depicted at the Nea Moni Church are the Baptism of Christ, the Crucifixion, the Descent from the Cross and the Descent into Limbo. In the main apse is the Mother of God, flanked by the Archangels Michael and Gabriel in the lateral apses. There are also fine mosaics in the narthex - the Washing of the Feet, the Mother of God surrounded by local Saints, the Betrayal. All these mosaics date from the time of the convent's foundation (C. 1050) and are thus rather later than those of Oàsios Loukás and rather earlier than those at Dafní. The frescoes in the exonarthex (among them a Last Judgment) date from the Late Byzantine period (14th C.).
