Karyes - Nea Moni Church and Museum
The dome of the Nea Moni church is borne, as at Dafní, on eight piers and spans the full width of the church, not merely the central aisle. The walls still have their original facing of red marble. Some of the mosaics were destroyed in the 1881 earthquake; in particular those on the dome, which collapsed, were lost. In subsequent restoration work the dome was rebuilt and the surviving mosaics made safe.

The other conventual buildings were damaged during the Turkish punitive expedition of 1822, and many of them are now in a state of dilapidation, as are the hospices for pilgrims around the convent.

Nea Moni Church - Refectory
By the gateway of the convent at the Nea Moni Church is a chapel commemorating those who were killed in 1822. Other notable features are the old refectory (trápeza) and a large cistern a few paces to the right of the main gateway. From the terrace of the new refectory (the one used by the nuns) there is a very beautiful view.
