Kitzsteinhorn

6.5km/4mi from Kaprun the road comes to the large parking lots of Kaprun-Thörl, with the lower stations of a cableway and a funicular. The cableway, Gletscherbahn Kaprun 1 (928m/3,045ft), runs up southwest in three stages, via the Salzbürger Hütte (1,897m/6,224ft) and the Alpincenter (2,452m/8,045ft; skilifts; cableway to the Schmiedinger Grat, 2,755m/9,039ft), near the Krefelder Hütte (2,294m/7,527ft), to the glaciered Kitzsteinhorn (3,202m/10,506ft). The upper station, on the Nordwestgrat (3,209m/9,938ft), has a viewing tunnel in the Schmiedinger Gletscher; there is skiing all year round, with several skilifts and a protected path to the summit (one and a half hours).
