Kapruner Tal
The beautiful Kesselstrasse (maximum gradient 12%; 1 in 8) along the right bank of the Kapruner Ache, passes the works village and the large Kaprun-Hauptstufe power station, which harnesses the water power of the extensive glacier areas of the Hohe Tauern. On the mountainside can be seen the massive pipes bringing the water down under pressure from the Maiskogel. The road then winds its way up the slopes of the Bürgkogel (950m/3,117ft). which blocks the valley.

Grosses Wiesbachhorn
There is a good climb - for experienced climbers only, with a guide - by way of the Heinrich- Schwaiger-Haus (2,082m/6,831ft; accommodation) to the summit of the Grosses Wiesbachhorn (3,564m/11,693ft: five to five and a half hours), which commands magnificent distant views.
Alpincenter
From a lower station the funicular, Gletscherbahn Kaprun 2 (911m/2,989ft), 4km/2.5mi long (600m/650yds on a steel bridge, 3.3km/ 2mi in a tunnel), goes up to the Alpincenter near the Krefelder Hütte.
Karlinger Kees
From the Höhenburg (2,108m/6,916ft), between the two dams, there is a superb panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and glaciers, with the tremendous rock wall of the Karlinger Kees in the middle ground; Berghaus Mooserboden (2,044m/6,706ft; Alpine climbing school).
Kesselfall - Alpenhaus
The road continues steeply uphill from the Limbergstollen parking lot, with many twists and two hairpin bends, to the Kesselfall- Alpenhaus (1,068m/3,504ft), beautifully set in a wooded defile; below, to the right, lie the Kessel Falls and to the southwest (seven to eight hours) rises the Kitzsteinhorn (cableway).
Limbergstollen Car Park
1.5km/1mi farther on past the Alpincenter in the Kapruner Tal is the Limbergstollen parking lot (938m/3,225ft), from which a lift in an inclined shaft, the Limbergstollen (3km/2mi long), gives access to the Limberg dam. Here application can be made to visit the dam installations and the power stations.
Lärchwandstrasse
The Lärchwandstrasse which continues from the Kesselfall-Alpenhaus (mail buses only: shuttle service) runs first through forest, then comes out into the open and continues uphill with sharp bends and through a tunnel to the end of the road (1,210m/3,970ft), 10km/6mi from Kaprun.
Maiskogel
2km/1.25mi from Kaprun, on the right, is the lower station (832m/2,730ft) of the cableway up the Maiskogel (1,552m/5,092ft; "Friends of Nature" hut), from which there is a superb view extending as far as the Grossglockner. The road continues up a high valley, passing the small Klamm reservoir. Ahead can be seen the huge wall of the Limberg dam.
