The mountain village of Kaprun, now a popular summer and winter resort, lies southwest of Salzburg at the mouth of the Kapruner Tal in the Hohe Tauern. The restored castle is the scene of numerous functions. Together with Zell am See it forms part of the so-called "Europa-Sport-Region", a good center for mountain walks and climbs, with ample
scope for skiers, including summer skiing on the Kitzsteinhorn. Kaprun developed into a place of some consequence after the construction of the impressive hydro-electric scheme, the Tauernkraftwerk Glockner-Kaprun, from 1939 onwards.
