Description
The ruins of what was once Chakang Rao lie on the southern approach to the town on Highway 1 before the bridge over the Menam Ping. Their distinguishing features are the laterite remains of the town's fort, Phom Thung Setti, and the four elegant restored chedis. The tall chedi on the left-hand side of the road, probably modeled on Burmese lines, full of niches, and crowned with a 20th c. Burmese-style wrought-iron canopy, stands in the precincts of what was Wat Boromathat, which has recently been fully restored. This was built in the early Bangkok period over three Sukhothai chedis. These can still be seen inside the wat, which is open to the public.
