The central feature of Kalmar's old town on Kvarnholmen is the Market Square (Stortorget), in which are the Cathedral and the Town Hall, both built in the second half of the 17th century to the design of Nicodemus Tessin the Elder. The Cathedral is in Italian Baroque style; notable features of the interior are the pulpit, of North German workmanship, the reredos and some fine sculpture.
