Koli Hills

The Koli Hills, one of the most attractive areas in Finland, lies on the southwestern shores of Lake Pielinen, on the northeastern fringe of the Finnish Lakeland. The hills are due to be designated a National Park.

Ukko-Koli
At Ahmovaara a side road branches off Road 18 (Joensuu-Kajaani) and runs east through rugged country, with expanses of forest, to end at a parking place at the Koli Hotel. From there a stepped path climbs up the rocky hill of Ukko-Koli (347m/1,139ft), from where there is a magnificent view of Lake Pielinen, 253m/830ft below, with its many wooded islands. To the south are two other peaks in the Koli range, Akka-Koli (339m/1,112ft) and Paha-Koli (334m/1,096ft). To the north is Ipatti (316m/1,037ft).

10km/6mi north of Ukko-Koli is the Loma-Koli holiday center, with a hotel, chalets and a camping site. Within easy reach is Lieksa.
