Tsuwano Tourist Attractions

The little town of Tsuwano, once a castle town, lies at the western tip of Honshu, 40mi/ 60km northeast of Yamaguchi. It still preserves many old buildings, including burghers' houses and samurai houses, recalling its earlier days. During the medieval period the town was held successively by the Yoshimi, Sakazaki and Kamei families, who fostered artistic activity in Tsuwano, which now attracts large numbers of visitors, particularly in spring and in the fall.

Taikodani Inari Jinja Shrine

One of the five largest inari shrines in Japan, Taikodani Inari has a long tunnel-like approach with a number of large torii gates. Visitors are drawn from all over western Japan to pray.

Tsuwano Historical Museum

Housed in the former Princely Academy, the Historical Museum has approximately 5,000 pieces of art and artifacts including arms and armor. Some of the articles on display belonged to Nishi Amane and Mori Ogai.

Museum of Folk Art

The Museum of Folk Art has exhibits that illustrate the history of the town and various items which belonged to the princely families.

Yomeiji Temple

Yomeiji Temple is the site of the Tomb of Mori Ogai, one of the leaders of the Meiji Restoration, and the mausoleum of the Kamei family.
