Izamal - Surroundings

Returning to the MEX 180 at Kantunil and proceeding east in the direction of Chichén Itzá and Valladolid, it is a further 26km/16mi to Libre Unión, from which a road leads south to Yaxcabá. 3km/2mi down this road a side road branches off to the beautiful Cenote Xtojil, 1km/.7mi away. 16km/10mi beyond the turning lies Yaxcabá, which has an interesting parish church with an unusual façade and three towers. Also in the village will be found a cenote, into which the local people threw their weapons, jewellery and money to save them from looting during the 19th c. "Caste War"; most of the objects were later recovered.
