Il Cretaccio
To the north of the Isola San Nicola, between San Domino and San Nicola, are the island of Il Cretaccio and a number of isolated stacks.
Isola Caprara
The most northerly of the three larger islands is the almost uninhabited island of Caprara or Capraia (up to 53m/175ft; area 0.5 sq.km/0.2 sq.mi).
Isola San Domino
The most westerly and scenically most attractive of the three major islands is San Domino (up to 16m/53ft; area 2 sq.km/1.75 sq.mi), an island with large areas of pine-forest which was used as a place of exile until 1943 and is now becoming an increasingly popular tourist resort. The largest place on the island, San Domino, lies above the east coast. There are a number of interesting caves accessible only from the sea, such as the Grotta delle Viole and the Grotta del Bue Marino, both with a beautiful play of light.
Isola San Nicola, Italy
(Near Foggia)
Northeast of San Domino is the smaller island of San Nicola (up to 75m/248ft; area 0.5 sq.km/.20 sq.mi), on which is the little walled village of San Nicola, capital of the archipelago, with a castle (rebuilt in the 15th century), the church of Santa Maria (1045), situated on a hill, and the remains of a ninth century abbey with a beautiful Renaissance doorway and parts of a Romanesque mosaic pavement (11th-12th centuries).
