South of Trento is Rovereto (204m/6,763ft; pop. 33,000). In the center of the town is the Piazza Rosmini, and a little way north of this the fine Renaissance palace now occupied by the Savings Bank, with an arcaded courtyard (restored in its original style 1902-05). Nearby is the Museo Civico, with a geological collection. In the Castello (14th-15th century), on higher ground, is a War Museum, with a collection of First World War mementos. To the south of the old town stands a conspicuous circular building, the Sacrario di Castel Dante (306m/1,010ft; view), in which more than 20,000 dead of the First World War are buried. Above it is a gigantic bell (22.6 tons), cast in 1965 to commemorate the dead of all nations, which is rung every evening at 8.30 or 9.30pm.
