The village of Populonia lies above the Golfo di Baratti some 15km/9mi north of Piombino.
History
The site of Populonia was occupied in prehistoric times. As Pupluna it was an Etruscan town, engaged from an early period in smelting copper ore from the Colline Metallífere and iron ore from Elba. It sank into insignificance in the seventh century, when the Bishop transferred his seat to Massa Maríttima.

Etruscan Tombs
Some of the Etruscan Tombs at Populonia date back to the 9th C B.C. They were concealed beneath deposits of slag which preserved the contents prior to the 20th C.
Etruscan Museum
The little Etruscan Museum (Museo Etrusco) in the private Gasparri villa contains numbers of grave-goods from the nearby Etruscan cemetery.
Rocca
High above the Golfo di Baratti stands the massive medieval castle, the rocca, with a large cylindrical tower and a square keep, from which there are fine panoramic views.
