Poppi Attractions
Poppi lies in the heart of the Casentino, some 40km/25 mi north of Arezzo and 55km/35 mi east of Florence.
History
The town first appears in the records, as Pupium, in 1169. After a long period of independence under the rule of the Counts Guidi it passed to Florence about 1440 and thereafter was governed by Florentine commissari and vicari.

Castello Pretorio
The Castello Pretorio, built for the Counts Guidi in the 13th century, is a plain and massive building with a tall tower; the battlements were added during the period of Florentine rule. The two-story wing is built round an elegant courtyard with the coats of arms of Florentine governors. The chapel has 14th century frescoes.
Adjoining the castello are the Torre dei Diávoli (Devils' Tower) and a large cistern.

San Fedele
The Church of San Fedele was originally a monastic church built for the Vallumbrosan Order in the late 13th century. In the three-aisled crypt is a gilt-bronze bust of San Victoriello. The choir contains a number of 16th and 17th century paintings.
